Some of the traditional roles of women still exist today. The women still have their own council and choose men to fill some of the tribe roles. Because of the more modern form of election the Iroquois have chosen to take on, the women currently have much less say unless elected into a position.

Even though the Iroquois are split between the U.S. and Canada, there was not full adoption of their social systems. However, they did take on language and religion from the early settlers. But even with those adoptions, it still wasn't enough to cut out the old languages and spiritual beliefs. With both the languages and religions and the interest of the Iroquois traditions existing in current times, the power of the women increasing again is an idea circulating throughout the societies.

Within each clan of the Iroquois Nation, the current Clan Mothers still performs the traditional duties. The current Clan Mothers include: Louise MacDonald of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation Bear Clan; Evelyn Jonathan of the Tonawanda Seneca Wolf Clan, and Gloria Thomas of the Onondaga Nation Deer Clan to name a few. The Clan Mothers of five the six Nations are known.
