The Iroquois, also known as the Five Nations of the Iroquois and then later the Six Nations after 1722, were a powerful Nation of Native Americans in the Northeast. They, like the Algonquin, had many different types of interactions with the early European settlers that ranged from trade to war and even fighting along with each other.

War was more than fighting over territory and commodities from the Iroquois. It was a part of the culture and tradition for young Iroquois men. They took pride in being in battle and showing the rest of the village who they were. It was able to boost his place in the tribe, and have him recognized for a potential spot as a village leader. If he did well in battle, and continued to show his village this pirde, the Clan Mother had the final say in where he would stand as a man in the village. Needless to say, women had power over the clan and its leader.
